Yuletide

Look at the pretty gift the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fairy has sent me! I tend not to go blazing through the archives until later (some time this week I'm sure) and so won't have a comprehensive list o' recs for a week or more, but I didn't want to miss out on reccing the fic that was written for me. Woohoo small fandom festiveness!
tinpra: (Default)
I really do read an astounding amount of fic. Not always the whole fic unfortunately.... Anywho, I haven't posted a reading list in ages (possibly not since just after New Year's!) and so this could get a lot scary. I think the novel reading list is going to be a lot shorter. Heck, I'm sure of it. Anywho, unto the breach before I forget:

As a note: This isn't necessarily a rec list. I may or may not give opinions on the books and fics. This is primarily a reading list.

The Family Trade by Charles Stross - "British author Stross mixes high-tech with medieval trappings in this highly entertaining science fantasy in the "misplaced modern" mode. Reporter Miriam Beckstein, recently fired for exposing a money laundering scheme and threatened by the criminals involved, finds that staring at her mother's antique brooch can move her from contemporary America to a Viking-settled parallel universe, where she discovers her true heritage as a countess among the world-walking, goods-smuggling Clan." I was not the biggest fan of this book and at the moment I don't have a good reason for why not. However, I did finish it and I borrowed the next book to read it. My biggest issue, I think, was with some of the storyline? But the plot is so intriguing that I keep wanting to know what happens next. *shrugs* (This is the Merchant Princes series, btw.)

City of Bones by Martha Wells ([livejournal.com profile] marthawells) - This has got to be my 4th time re-reading this book. I like it that much. I think the only other book I've read as many times are my Mary Poppins books. Seriously. Anywho: "Khat is a Krisman..., which places him even lower on the social scale than his foreign-born partner. The two are coerced into working with the Patrician Warder, Elen, who is searching out a specific relic... Warders have certain mental powers, although overusing these powers can cause them to go mad." Every time I read this, and I mean every single time I am invariably sucked in. I keep trying to get Mom to read. :D

Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris - this is the most recent Sookie Stackhouse Book. As a random point of interest for anyone who's just now coming to the books after watching the spinoff HBO series "True Blood"...these used to be called "The Southern Vampire Novels." I'm not sure when their designation changed, or whether it was b/c of the series or b/c it just made more sense to name it after Sookie. Anywho, the book was likable enough. I devoured it quickly enough, lol, but it's telling that even though I only read this a couple of months ago I don't remember much of the plot. There is a genuine mystery that Sookie gets, unfortunately, sucked into. Some nice people that we like end up dying and/or getting hurt. I dunno. We seemed to get one of everyone in this book. Maybe in the next book it, the series, will pull itself in some more? Don't get me wrong, not at all an unenjoyable book but definitely start with the first book in the series if you're a newbie. This book is not for the uninitiated.

And I'm going to cut here b/c, as I peruse my other reading list posts I was not nearly this wordy! Apparently when I'm bad, I'm really bad. )
tinpra: (Default)
...but recs too! Admittedly most of the fic (still backlogging my fanfic reading) I note are things I would recommend to someone, but that's partly because those are the ones I review and thus are the ones I have a record of. I go through a lot more fic than what I note. Luckily for me I tend to go through them quickly :D Although there is the occasional story that starts well and ends gag.

Anywho, on to my yuletide reading and rec list. FINALLY! )

Unless I can somehow remember what novels I read between UnChristian and the stuff I listed in the last post, this is all going to be fic-related. Really, it's a shame the library doesn't keep records of these kinds of things. It'd make my life so much easier ;)

I don't know if I ever mentioned this one, but it's worth it for the unique pairing alone: Common Respect by [livejournal.com profile] mgsmurf. It's a Firefly fanfic with...a Simon/Zoe pairing. Yes, that's right...Simon/Zoe, or Zoe/Simon depending on how you want to work it. It's not a full on pairing, but they are the featured "couple." Heck...just go read it. You may have never thought it was possible, you may have never thought about it at all, but it's worth the read.

So to follow up my previous posting, here are the things I've been reading lately:

Fire Study by Maria V. Snyder, which is the last book in her (as far as I know) unnamed series. Previous, extremely brief, reviews are here. I found the main character annoying through much of the book, but apparently that worked b/c I zipped right through it.

The Eyre Affair, Lost in a Good Book and (just finished) The Well of Lost Plots by Jasper Fforde - I have loved this series. I'm pretty sure the series is still in progress and that I haven't reached the last current book. The books are supremely fun if you love classic literature, particularly classic English lit. It's hard to explain what makes the books so much fun. Trust me, I've already tried. But if you like a bit of satire, and a lot of humor, and just...it's great. Read the books, darnit, or at least give'em a go.

and then there was fanfiction )

As I mentioned at some point previously, I had been reading a book called UnChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks About Christianity...and Why It Matters by David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons. I borrowed it from the library. I want to buy it.

I've just started reading Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch (the same guy who brought me the awesome The Lies of Locke Lamorra). Once again I'm struck by the cussing (f-bombs like whoa), but they're thieves. Down on their luck thieves trying to take over a not-so-great gang at this point in the story. Cussing is, unfortunately, to be expected. Yet I soldier on. My brain/mouth filter's going to need more paying attention to than usual, though.

If I hadn't mentioned it, I've also read [livejournal.com profile] erinm_4600's California Sun. Admittedly I only managed it because Erin gave it to me in one doc, but what joy! Luckily Erin crosslinks like nobody's business so if, like me, you've missed a story or two you can find them from this link.

And there are other stories I've flipped over since my last "what I'm reading" post, but I can't think of them at the moment. It'll come to me. Eventually. ;)
tinpra: (Default)
...for trying to do these off the top of my head. And anyone who knows me even sorta well knows I read voraciously so you should have been suspicious when I only mentioned 4 fics and 2 authors :p Luckily Katya randomly reminded me of fics I've read at work, and also luckily I save reviews that I send when possible.

Anywho, more ficcage (b/c I still haven't picked up any novels to replace the two I decided not to read):

Feel As You Believe by [livejournal.com profile] erinm_4600 is one of erin's many unfinished Tin Man fics. It's erin, though, so it's well worth the WIP. There are 3 parts so far and erin's usually really good about crosslinking stuff, so you shouldn't have any problems there. And new OC to fall in love with in part 2 :D

Future Echoes by [livejournal.com profile] deird1 is a BtVS fic written for the [livejournal.com profile] still_grr. It's a comm I belong to but still haven't written anything for. Sigh. Anywho, it features Buffy and 's appropriately creepy for the season.

Another Tin Man: Ten Things that Never Happened to DG by [livejournal.com profile] velara. It's a drabble of DG a la Lost Unfortunately, as far as I know, [livejournal.com profile] velara hasn't written the other 9 stories her title promises us. *shakes fist*

And a third Tin Man-er: Daedalus and Icarus by [livejournal.com profile] effie214 (whom you may know as Celia Stanton on ff.net) is a pure tear jerker. I was reading something else earlier which made me think of this, though I couldn't remember that it was this specific fic for the life of me. Anywho, it's a strange Azkadellia- and Glitch-centered fic. You'll have to read it to understand why I call it strange

And that is officially all I can get from the top of my head (and my gmail) right now. I'm positive I've read more stuff, and that a number of it has even gone unreviewed *ducks and hides* but I can't get my mind to think of more details right now.

All my readings lately have been of the ficcish variety so...there. ;) In no particular order:

When the World Ends by [livejournal.com profile] lieueitak (although this link will take you to ff.net). This one's a House fic. I know I don't mention and/or rec House fics very often, but I'm only a tangential House fan and haven't watched anything from this season at all. That said, [livejournal.com profile] lieueitak is excellent at capturing House's voice and his signature Proud to Be a Prick-ness. I know, I know, you're thinking "How the heck would she know if she doesn't watch House?" Don't believe me. Read the reviews. Anywho, I am happy to rec this one and not just mention it as something I read in passing. Be warned, it has spoilers for "Joy" (as you'll see in the Author's Notes) but if you don't mind mild spoiling it is so completely worth the read. I stayed up late to read this one.

Hero is another ff.net find, by Jedi Keladry. It's a Harry Potter, Snape and Hermione friendshippy fic. I know, I know, it's Snape, but Keledry makes this work. I promise. This was actually my second Jedi Keladry fic.

Hope's Sanctuary was my first Jedi Keladry fic. It's a Star Wars, Obi Wan/Padme Amidala fic. It's a slow build romance, and quite unlike what you'd expect of an Obidala fic. (And as a side note, for a second the auto-fix on my lj editor recognized "Obidala" as a correct word. Hee!) This is more of a "what if" fic, or perhaps an AH, than a true AU. It follows a lot of the SW mythology even while taking some small turns as our characters make different decisions and have to work through them. Even if you're anti-jedi pairings, I think you'll like this. Half the reviews for this one are from people going "I don't usually like Obidala fics, but I like this!" God knows I did (I do like Obidala, for the record. The stranger the combo, the more it fits my bill it seems like). It was enough to send me searching for more of Keladry's fics.

She Was Beautiful to Him is another Jedi Keladry (this time going as Keladry Lupin) fic, and another Snape/Hermion. Like "Hope's Sanctuary" it's a slow romance kind of thing, starting in 4th year or thereabouts to post-war. It goes seriously AU around Half-Blood Prince but it's well worth it. Much of Keladry's S/H fics are archived here (if she has any other SW fics, I don't know where to find them) and the ones I've picked through I've really liked. I'm mentioning this one in particular because 1) I'm too lazy to list everything else and 2) I really liked the way this builds. Keladry has a good handle on who the characters are and is willing to make the reader go through the paces of building up a story.

Annnnd that's it-ish. ;)

Or at least I hope to be by re-posting what I am and have read.

So, just finished reading "Hope's Sanctuary" by Jedi Keladry. It's an alternate history Star Wars fic featuring an indirect Obi Wan/Padme. Loved it.

In real-fic, I just finished Embrace the Night by Karen Chance. It was a good end to the previous two books. Heavy on the near-casual sex so be aware.

I started reading Heat Stroke by Rachel Caine but after the main char had had mind blowing sex with a guy she'd admitted to now knowing very well at all (though he's a carryover from the previous novel) and then wondered where the relationship was going I wasn't sure I could keep going. The casualness of the casual sex was...off-putting. Sigh.

I have in queue to read The Last Assassin by Barry Eisler...in which I can pretty much expect one casual sex scene between two of the main characters. Dunno if I'm actually going to read though I've read all the previous novels in the series.

So apparently it's been a few days since I've checked one of my email addresses (I have 3 primary and my original hotmail acct that I check periodically) and I have 2 notices from the library that I have books on hold. Two notices and 3 books, and I'm sure that at least one of those books is as big as the tome I am currently reading (The Lies of Locke Lamora if you're curious. Good book. More cussing than I'd like, but what do you expect from a story where the heroes are thieves, con men and gangsters?). I think I've bitten off more than I can chew. Meep!

I should probably go back to posting my readings, but God knows it's been lots of WIPs (:p [livejournal.com profile] erinm_4600) and chain-read fanfic. I'll ponder...

Unrelated: One of my stories has received a spurt of interest on FF.net seemingly overnight. Yay!

Just finished reading [livejournal.com profile] lieueitak's House fic The Centre Does Not Hold written for the [livejournal.com profile] musicfest ficathon. It's House/Cuddy though likely not in a way you'd expect. Go. Read. Comment!

I have a small slew of reads to catch up on mentioning. Real books first, fanfic second:

Southern Fire by Juliet E. McKenna. It's the beginning of a series and leaves you on a cliffy, of course, but satisfyingly so. I'm looking forward to finding the next one, since I'm not sure when this was written.

Aaaand that concludes the real books ;P Fanfics: and because there are lots, a cut! )

so it's a busy posting day for me, go figure.

Just finished reading Dark Moon Defender by Sharon Shinn a lil while ago. Most recent paperback in her "Twelve Houses" series. It got not-so-great reviews, this one and the previous Thirteenth House. I don't understand why for either. Admittedly if you don't like the hero and heroine of DMD you're highly screwed. It's an ensemble cast for most of the novels, but you have whole chapters of the lovers-in-question which could make someone who doesn't care for them a little stir crazed. As for Thirteenth House ppl seemed to not like the [horribly] bad choice in relationships the heroine took, but I think Shinn dealt with the fooling-around-with-a-married man honestly and realistically. It's amazing how much and how well you can lie to yourself when everything you think you want is right in front of you.

Anyway, didn't mean to soapbox.

Been reading an assortment of fanfic this week as I procrastinate from nano. Am currently reading Flight of the Sparrow by Eledhwen a Pirates of the Caribbean fanfiction that covers Jack's life from cabin boy to captain. Haven't gotten past the first chapter so can't much comment. Seems pretty gen.

Read Tattoo by [livejournal.com profile] madam_puddifoot yesterday. It was...okay. I dunno. I guess I was expecting something different.

And, like I said, a host of other things I forgot to remember ;)

Just finished reading In the Black by feldman. If feldman has an LJ, I don't know since I got this from a random rec-page. If you're into either Firefly or Farscape, go read. It's a crossover fic featuring Crichton and River that's so perfect you'll feel bereft when it's over.
tinpra: (Default)
As I catch myself up on all the fanfics I've been reading lately:

Browncoats and Scabbards a Highlander/Firefly crossover written by [livejournal.com profile] idontlikegravy, in which "Methos and Richie have a spot of Alliance trouble so they buy passage on the only ship that will take them..." So far I like this. Unfortunately it's a WIP (and I try so hard not to read WIPs! What's wrong w/me lately?) but an interesting one. Which is probably part of the problem :p I don't like Duncan in this, he does make an appearance, but perhaps his unlikeability will be worked out satisfactorily, otherwise I think I'll have to downgrade the likeability of the whole thing :(

No Dominion is a Highlander/Anita Blake crossover written by [livejournal.com profile] auberus. Also a WIP. I also so far like this, but have even less to go on. I think I just like someone getting the jump on Edward and it being Methos. Aaaand I've probably given away too much. Anywho, it's only got 3 parts so far. If you scroll through the comments you'll see my whine about having more.

And the story that started me on this whole crossover tear, so much so that I joined [livejournal.com profile] highland_cross to find more, Blue Sun Rising another Highlander/Firefly crossover, this time written by [livejournal.com profile] jinxed_wood. This is yet another WIP, or maybe the first WIP since I started this one first, but at 12 chapters it's longer than the other two. If you liked Highlander and Firefly/Serenity, I think you'll really like this. My only issue, if I had to have one, is that the Firefly crew don't have much of an accent. Of course that might have just been the author deciding that it would be easier on her reading public if she didn't write in dialect. And it is. I'm just sayin' that if you're used to a more Western-looking text where Firefly is concerned, you're not going to find as much of that here.

So I'm just about done with The Guiltless by Branwyn for Harry Potter. It's a Snape and Harry gen story in which Snape comes to discover just how abusive the Dursley's really are (which is more abusive than JK Rowling makes them) and Snape and Dumbledore make moves to do something about it. A fairly common-ish story. It's...okay. Not reccing it, just saying that I read it.

I just finished Numbers Never Lie by klynie. It's an HP alternative to the Severitus challenge. I was completely willing to go with it until Hermione, who is the Snape-child in question, yells out "DAD!" after it's been established that she and Snape only barely tolerate each other. *shakes head* Read at your own risk.

I feel like i'm incredibly behind on updating this. Which means either I've skipped a book or two....or I haven't been reading nearly as much as I thought i was :(

Anywho...listening to Mansfield Park by Jane Austen
reread Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling

no novel-length fanfics...just bits of randomness. guess i haven't read a lot lately :( does re-reading my partially done 2005 nano-novel count?

So I picked up and finished Patricia Brigg's Blood Bound from her new Mercedes Thompson series. Vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, oh my.

Am now reading Kim Harrison's For a Few Demon's More. More vampires, more werewolves, plus witches, demons and pixies (and fairies and elves and every other thing that's not supposed to exist). From her Hollows, or maybe Rachel Morgan, series.

Am also reading Jesus Among Other Gods by Ravi Zacharias. No vamps, no wolves, no witches or pixies or fairies or elves, but there may or may not be demons. I haven't gotten that far yet ;)
