I have a wee dilemma. I need to choose a male Japanese name. (Yes, these are the big questions of my life) I've narrowed it down to Yaru and Yori, for reason of their meaning.

Meaning notwithstanding, what do you guys think. Which sounds better, or less bad, to you?

Thanks!

I have 4 fics for "Inception" -- only one of which has gotten reviews on ff.net. the other three have strong hit numbers, have been favorited...everything but reviews. What does that meeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaan?

How do ya'll feel, fellow fic-writers, when you this happens to you? One the one hand it's frustrating not getting reviews on stories posted to lj since there's little way of knowing who's reading or bookmarking your work. On the other hand, there's the frustration of knowing ppl are reading your work on ff.net and having to wonder why the heck they won't say yea or nay about it!

Argh!

Then again, maybe this doesn't happen to you guys. Meep.

What should I be doing? Oh so many things. Starting with editing the novel!!! I haven't been able to edit for the last week or three for various reasons but now that I'm back to my regular schedule? So out of the groove. And, as always, so completely lazy.

What have I done today? Worked on a TM fic. Which is good in its own way. I'm holding off new chapters of the epistloray fic until I have a new one for this, but still it's not like I don't have other ficcish things to do. I've got a series each for Buffy and La Femme Nikita that are languishing, and a couple of fic requests that have gone unanswered.

And knitting! Although I guess I can do that tomorrow on the way to work.

Oh, and I had a Lost related dream the other night.

EDIT I hate firefox 3.0 or whatever version this is

...do I get to procrastinate on DecNaNo if it's to finish reading your fic?

Anyone else heard of [livejournal.com profile] feedbackmeme or participated? I'm sorely tempted (who doesn't want random love after all?) but know I'd have to, *gasp* read.

Okay okay, so I'm in ;) Fanfic trolling is love.

...while at work, and to make it less conspicuous I left out the quote marks for the dialogue. And now I want to keep it that way.

Edit Upon re-reading it, however, it gets too complicated w/o quotes so i put them in. it's on my fic-journal if you so care to read. it'll also be cross-posted to [livejournal.com profile] alphabetasoup, [livejournal.com profile] fanfic100 and OzMIA.

Just finished reading [livejournal.com profile] lieueitak's House fic The Centre Does Not Hold written for the [livejournal.com profile] musicfest ficathon. It's House/Cuddy though likely not in a way you'd expect. Go. Read. Comment!

I have a small slew of reads to catch up on mentioning. Real books first, fanfic second:

Southern Fire by Juliet E. McKenna. It's the beginning of a series and leaves you on a cliffy, of course, but satisfyingly so. I'm looking forward to finding the next one, since I'm not sure when this was written.

Aaaand that concludes the real books ;P Fanfics: and because there are lots, a cut! )

so it's a busy posting day for me, go figure.

Just finished reading Dark Moon Defender by Sharon Shinn a lil while ago. Most recent paperback in her "Twelve Houses" series. It got not-so-great reviews, this one and the previous Thirteenth House. I don't understand why for either. Admittedly if you don't like the hero and heroine of DMD you're highly screwed. It's an ensemble cast for most of the novels, but you have whole chapters of the lovers-in-question which could make someone who doesn't care for them a little stir crazed. As for Thirteenth House ppl seemed to not like the [horribly] bad choice in relationships the heroine took, but I think Shinn dealt with the fooling-around-with-a-married man honestly and realistically. It's amazing how much and how well you can lie to yourself when everything you think you want is right in front of you.

Anyway, didn't mean to soapbox.

Been reading an assortment of fanfic this week as I procrastinate from nano. Am currently reading Flight of the Sparrow by Eledhwen a Pirates of the Caribbean fanfiction that covers Jack's life from cabin boy to captain. Haven't gotten past the first chapter so can't much comment. Seems pretty gen.

Read Tattoo by [livejournal.com profile] madam_puddifoot yesterday. It was...okay. I dunno. I guess I was expecting something different.

And, like I said, a host of other things I forgot to remember ;)

As I catch myself up on all the fanfics I've been reading lately:

Browncoats and Scabbards a Highlander/Firefly crossover written by [livejournal.com profile] idontlikegravy, in which "Methos and Richie have a spot of Alliance trouble so they buy passage on the only ship that will take them..." So far I like this. Unfortunately it's a WIP (and I try so hard not to read WIPs! What's wrong w/me lately?) but an interesting one. Which is probably part of the problem :p I don't like Duncan in this, he does make an appearance, but perhaps his unlikeability will be worked out satisfactorily, otherwise I think I'll have to downgrade the likeability of the whole thing :(

No Dominion is a Highlander/Anita Blake crossover written by [livejournal.com profile] auberus. Also a WIP. I also so far like this, but have even less to go on. I think I just like someone getting the jump on Edward and it being Methos. Aaaand I've probably given away too much. Anywho, it's only got 3 parts so far. If you scroll through the comments you'll see my whine about having more.

And the story that started me on this whole crossover tear, so much so that I joined [livejournal.com profile] highland_cross to find more, Blue Sun Rising another Highlander/Firefly crossover, this time written by [livejournal.com profile] jinxed_wood. This is yet another WIP, or maybe the first WIP since I started this one first, but at 12 chapters it's longer than the other two. If you liked Highlander and Firefly/Serenity, I think you'll really like this. My only issue, if I had to have one, is that the Firefly crew don't have much of an accent. Of course that might have just been the author deciding that it would be easier on her reading public if she didn't write in dialect. And it is. I'm just sayin' that if you're used to a more Western-looking text where Firefly is concerned, you're not going to find as much of that here.

I don't think anyone else on my flist is a fan of "The Dark Is Rising" series, so I suppose this is for whatever happener-by happens to browse by:

20th Century Fox has jumped on the e-vil fanlib.com bandwagon by offering a fanfic contest (although they're not calling it that) for the new movie, coming out 10/5/07 supposedly. I hope serious ficcers and fans stay far, far away and that some lucky impressionable kid wins. They'll get a call from the kid playing Will (a teenaged American, not a pre-adolescent Brit!!!) and get to visit the set and all that jazz. I'm sure they'll love it and not feel like they've sold their creative soul to The Man.

I finally finished Ravi Zacharias' Jesus Among Other Gods and can safely say that I could read that again as if for the first time. It was just that...deep? Thick? Dense? I dunno, but I really feel like I should read it again with a notebook handy. And mayhap a dictionary. Ha!

On the downside, I'm officially out of reading material. Well "real" reading material. I have been reading fanfic, as always, so that's making this list o' reading material:

Prodigals by katt - X-Men Movieverse
How Michael's Locks Were Shorn by MLN - La Femme Nikita
and Blue Eyes by Thea - Farscape...which i technically haven't finished.

I've read a myriad other stories, but these are the only novel/novella length ones I can think of that I've been reading/have read lately.

Why do I blame Katya? Because in the guise of helping her not take on a new challenge, not only did she still take on the challenge (admit it, you were always gonna go for it. i was just a ruse :P) she somehow convinced me to sign up to. That's it. I'm certefiable. A word that I apparently can't even spell. Anywho, in true [livejournal.com profile] lieuietak fashion, I plan on taking someone down with me. The challenge: Write 26 fanfics based on alphabetical prompts. There are 4 "word lists" - as they call them - two non-themed, one with a Mood theme and one with a Mythology theme. The community: [livejournal.com profile] alphabetasoup. The selling points: There are sooooooo many things open! Fandoms, characters, you name, they likely got it. For all my LFNers...the entire show is up for grabs (move it Diane!). Plus, and this was actually convinced me, over and above Katie's reverse psychology, if you slack for 4 months they drop you. So for any of us kookie kids who've taken up [livejournal.com profile] fanfic100 and are wondering how we're going to make it to story 2 (or in my case story 7) let alone story 100, at least you know that if you let it go the other challenge hanging over your head like that famous sword will eventually go away on its own. Of course I might be the only slacker on my friend's list :P

Anyway, so there you have it. On top of the 90-some-odd stories I still haven't written. So now would be a good time to [re]mention that I've created a separate lj for my penname under which I'll be doing both the AlphaBeta fics and all my other fanfics. I think I'm going to let my lj-community drop because, really, what's the point when I doubt they'll be other posters. So add me! I'm [livejournal.com profile] tvashti. Nothing's there right now. Like I don't think it's even got the layout I want to use, and it's a plus account so I apologize for the ads even now. I may, gulp, pay for an account.

Where did betrayal start? In the head or in the heart? That was a line from something, he knew. Something his sister would know – real and fabricated. Simone would have been amused to know that he’d transformed her into his sister upon her death. She would have smirked and shook her head: “Sometimes, Michael, I wonder exactly how you climbed that ladder so fast when I know the only person you’ve been sleeping with is me.” Then she’d cup his big face in her narrow hand and kiss him, soft, sweet, a nip on the end: “Or at least you had better.”

Or she’d pinch him like they were grade-schoolers who didn’t yet know how to express affection: “Cool is not just work related, Michael. Cool is seven days, twenty-four hours, always on the job unflappable. Sister. Birkoff could’ve done better.”

He could have. But Elena had believed him – had let him get away with a piss poor lie, more likely. She had been there

Elements

Power and knowledge were his temptation so they were always sure to keep him supplied with his techno-fix. They had very quickly found that all work and no play made for a very dangerous genius. Like a parasitic plant, he had quickly wound his roots deeply, thoroughly, in and throughout every thing that answered to a mainframe command: files, panels, servers...doors, lights, air. Not out of maliciousness. They hadn't programmed him for that. He'd done it because he could because he'd wanted to know what that system did and where that data backroad would lead him. They shuddered to think what he might have become if he had been pu through regular training, assuming he had survived. But they quickly discovered that a dwarfed thing is still a wild thing. It will bie the hand that feeds if the hand lets it starve long enough.

Their own little feral child.

Operations watched Birkoff twiddling his pencil between the fingers of his left hand as his right hand danced over the controls. The boy was greenish through the monitor.
