Happy 10th Anniversary, Buffy fandom!

As of today, it's been 10 years exactly since "Chosen," the BtVS series finale aired, and fandom is still going strong! So, to celebrate 10 years since Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended, let's have a celebratory comment!ficathon! Absolutely everyone is welcome to play, whether they've only seen three or four episodes of BtVS or if they've seen every episode of BtVS three or four times each.

The general gist of this is the same as any other comment!ficathon, in that people leave prompts in the form of comments, which are open for anybody else to fill with a ficlet posted in a comment. Everything should be realated to the Buffyverse (including characters from Angel), but other than that, any prompts or fills are more than welcome!

This ficathon starts May 20, 2013, the tenth anniversary of BtVS's finale, but it will continue on indefinitely, as long as there is continued interest. So, don't be afraid to keep leaving and filling prompts come May 21st.

Rules

1. One comment per post. We already know what fandom you're prompting for, but please format your prompts with a character/pairings, prompt format. You can leave as many prompts as you want (the more the better), and fill as many as you want.

2. Crossovers and AUs are allowed and welcome, so long as BtVS is one of the crossover fandoms and that at least one BtVS character remains central to the prompt. If you're prompting a crossover, please format your prompt: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/other fandom, characters/pairings, prompt.

3. Bonus points to people who pimp the comment!ficathon, so we can get as many Buffy fans to come and play. There are banners in this comment thread, but if you feel moved to make your own, please do and post them to that thread, because the current banners were made by me and are mediocre at best.

4. Please post a link to all filled prompts here, in this comment thread. Make sure to give your fills a header, including title (if you have one), fandoms if you write a crossover fill, characters, pairings, rating, and warnings. For warnings, warn as you feel appropriate, but please be sure to warn for character death, explicit sexual content, extreme violence, underage sex, and rape/noncon/dubcon.

5. Have fun! This is a comment!ficathon to celebrate 10 years of fandom post-Buffy. Leave and fill as many prompts as you like, but make sure you do it respectfully. Feedback is actively encouraged, but no flaming! So have fun, Buffy fandom, and celebrate how long we've survived!

...but thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lieueitak (which, usually i can spell your name from memory, but every now and then i.e. right now you have way too many I's and E's in your name, woman) and our Lenten NaNo, I am currently working on:

  • the next sequel series to my TDKR/BtVS series
  • that Iron Man fic that I never thought would get past a couple of random scenes emailed to a friend (ha! couple of scenes. ha!)
  • I did an Inception/TDKR/BtVS interlude to the TDKR/BtVS series that apparently broke some brains (sorry!)
  • my previously on-life-support LFN series for FF100
  • my seemingly-on-life-support-but-no-it-really-was-on-my-mind-y'all Tin Man series
  • and started writing that sequel to my Jeb-and-a-little-person-in-the-woods Tin Man story that's been kicking around in my head almost from the beginning. Actually, technically this one's [livejournal.com profile] erinm_4600's fault, so "blame" her ;)

And that's my life in fandom. Vaguely. :D

If you're wondering why I'm not posting this on the fanfic journal, I did a while ago while I was in the thick of things. Honestly not sure why I'm giving an update here, too.

The Crumbling of the Fourth Wall: Why fandom shouldn't hide anymore
by Aja Romano

"The fourth wall is like the Berlin wall at this point. It's only a matter of time." —iaddedarainbow

In the world of theater, the term "fourth wall" refers to the invisible wall that divides the characters from the audience. In the untamed, sprawling, creative world of fandom, the fourth wall refers to the invisible line of cover that shields fans from the outside world. The fourth wall is what we think of as our security: a battlement of protection keeping our wild, pioneering settlement safe—right up until it fails to protect us.

Even after four decades of steady production, the idea of fanfiction, fan-art, slash, and fans otherwise doing whatever they/we want with other people’s characters still shocks and scandalizes many. The fourth wall is what insulates us, protecting us from their often harsh judgment, and sometimes even from real-life repercussions. A mix of Fight Club-like codes of silence (the first rule of fandom: do not talk about fandom) and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell-level feigned ignorance, this imaginary wall is what creates an impregnable barrier between fandom and everybody else.

Except that it doesn’t. Not even a little bit.

Because of the current stigma that all fanfiction is either porn, plagiarism, or otherwise creepy and gross, many fans don’t enjoy the privilege of owning their own fan activities. We fear that being "outed" as a fanfic writer or fanartist may result in being fired, getting kicked out of our community or religious groups, having our Internet access taken away, or seeing our friendships end. This isn't melodrama; each of these things has happened to people I know. Being outed as a writer of fanfiction can have serious consequences. I say this having experienced many of the items on that list firsthand myself.

Read the rest at the Daily Dot

Aja is part of fandom and, from what I can tell, and is the Daily Dot's fandom writer. You want news on LJ, fests, and the craziness of fandom-meets-nonfandom, she's the one you're going to be reading.

Anywho, what do you guys think of the op-ed and her opinion? Should we, as a body, "come out" and break the "fourth wall"? Are you (as individuals) hiding behind said wall for the reasons that she gives? Are you hiding at all? The handful of comments are worth reading as well.

That awkward moment when your gen fiction has been added to a slash rec list. Sigh.

If anyone happens to spot a rogue QPE Part 6 story running around in a comm where it ought not to be, please let me know. Thanks!

I just realized that, although I nominated fandoms for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, I didn't actually sign up. Sad tinpra is sad. :(

If you subscribe to, or are a regular fan of, io9 then you've probably already seen this faboo post about artist renderings of kick butt women warriors wearing armor that *gasp* may actually save their lives! Not that you can't kick butt while wearing heels and metal underwear, but you're definitely more likely to twist an ankle and get gutted in the process.

I'm just sayin'.

Personally, I'd like to see this live-action. Not to say that Xena didn't take a few names in her day, but she also should have been sporting a lot booboos with that getup (except when Lucy Lawless was pregnant and they finally put her in full body armor). Doesn't anyone else wanna see a bunch of female samuri with the scary masks? C'mon...you know you wanna :D

I blame this on [livejournal.com profile] klcthebookworm, although [livejournal.com profile] erinm_4600 deserves some of the blame, too ;)

(Why yes, that is my handwriting, and my wall.)

I'm surprised all of TM fandom isn't beating down my flist's door with this one: Google is celebrating the 71st Anniversary of the "Wizard of Oz" movie with a cute "drawn" google. Go check it out. It's all sorts of adorable :)

Author whose writing that I love who has an lj? Visited my fic-journal. Don't know why, and since I don't write for their fandom I think it's safe to not care. I am possibly over-ecstatic.

That is all.

AO3

Is anyone else on the flist using An Archive of Our Own or AO3 for short? Even if you aren't, does anyone have thoughts on the site? Anyone participating or following [livejournal.com profile] yuletide will know that the seasonal challenge has moved its archive over to the AO3 site.

If you don't know how I feel about it. I remember when the site started making self-announcements via various comms, and I wasn't sure what I thought about it then. If for no other reason than having to remember to post a fic in one more place is a pain in the petard, I was reluctant to join. However AO3 is affiliated with, or is the working arm of, the Organization for Transformative Works, or the OTW. My issue with the OTW lies partly with their premise of fanwork being a transformative work, transformative works being important and legit, and thus fanwork is imp and legit.

I have no problem with saying fanwork is transformative: it can be. I have no problem with saying fanwork is important: it can be. I am saying, however, that we are by and large treading on someone's intellectual property (as all you flist-y people know I'm a fanfic writer/reader, and I used to make very poor graphics), which makes what we do illegal to a certain extant. Hence all those lovely cease-and-desist letters that authors, corporations, etc., can send to sites and writers. So with that in mind, that fans producing fanwork are treading on thin mushy legal ground, I am wary of jumping on either the AO3 or OTW bandwagons, though I completely understand where they're coming from. God knows I have sometimes labored (perhaps much too hard) on some of my fanworks, and that I have read some stories that have deeply effected and affected me. My fanfic is important to me, but I realize the tenuous legitimacy it has.

And it this point it would have been nice for the OTW to clearly define "transformative" in it's legal terms, which are the ones it is using, vs. it's popular one. According to Wikipedia (that bastion of all knowledge): In United States copyright law, transformation is a possible justification that use of a copyrighted work may qualify as fair use, i.e., that a certain use of a work does not infringe its holder's copyright due to the public interest in the usage. Transformation is an important issue in deciding whether a use meets the first factor of the fair-use test, and is generally critical for determining whether a use is in fact fair, although no one factor is dispositive.

There are certainly court decisions, legal happenings and university studies regarding fannish work, but I still don't know what that means for the guys and gals on the internet street. Not in the long run at least. Some people, and by ppl I mean TV folks and writers and corporate folks, etc, don't seem to much care what we do. Or they encourage it b/c it helps ratings. I dunno. Other ppl care desperately--both for and against.

So...after all of that ( :s ) what do you guys think of AO3? Just another fansite? The greatest thing to happen to fan-writers ever? Something that's going to come back to bite us on the collective fannish butt some time in the future? Will AO3 even be able to sustain itself? Look at all the concessions and changes FF.net has had to make in its tenure that had less to do with fan and system-server needs, and more to do with legal pressures, etc.

(On that same note, since I am a member of AO3 (all '09 and future yuletide writers are) I have AO3 invitations if anyone wants one.)

It's official. I can now join Alice fandom. Woot to the hoot.

And I will. As soon as I'm done with the kitchen. Maybe. So possibly by midday tomorrow...

Also? I'm being stalked/attacked/terrorized by a roach. Save me. Please.

EDIT It attacked my laptop. But I saved it before the creature touched it, which would have forced me to burn said laptop. Whose name may or may not be Nairobi, but that's neither here nor there. So, um, if you're sending reinforcements...hurry. Please. Meep.

Actually this is inspired by this conversation with [livejournal.com profile] moony_blues regarding my unusual house sortings yesterday, but...

Does anyone know why the hybrid/meshed Harry Potter Houses are sometimes called "The Seventh House"? I've seen it mostly in [livejournal.com profile] hphouseicons when icon makers are referring to their mixed-house icons.
