Even So

The only reason Contessa was sure that Richard hadn't hung up was because he was still showing up online via Skype. Besides, he sounded too awake to have fallen asleep at his computer. Perhaps in his embarrassment he was trying to think of something else to talk about or--even more shocking--he really was considering his poorly chosen words. Which would be more than shocking, actually.

The silence between them stretched on for so long that Contessa was considering whether to pack it in for the night or to begin another project, when Richard finally decided to say something: "So this date..."

Contessa's eyebrows rose. "Careful."

Richard laughed. "I was just gonna ask you where he's taking you.

"Oh come on, Tessa,"
he said when she took too long to answer. "I'm not gonna stake out the place."

Feeling her face heat, she said, "You'll never believe me."

"It can't be that bad. Try me."

Contessa rifled her short, red-red hair. "A zydeco bar--"

"A what?!"

"--in New Orleans."

"And this is supposed to be a client--"

Contessa cut him off quickly. "Yeah, yeah. I know. Which is why I said I have a date and not a meeting with a client. We're not going to talk about this all night, are we? Because apparently I'm the only one who has to get up in the morning."

"I have class tomorrow."

"At what time? Two? Because it's 3 a.m. now."

Richard snorted. "This is nothing, Tess."

"Tessa," she corrected, automatically. "And I don't even want to know about your crazy non-sleeping habits. What I do want to know is what the my own bed looks like before the sun rises."

"You've got hours for that."

"Shut up, Richard," she said, but she was laughing. "I'm going to sleep. I'll let you know how the date goes when I get back. How's that suit you."

"It'd suit me if you let me run a background check on the guy," he grumbled.

"What's your major in again? Art History? Are you sure you're going into the right field?"

"Ha ha, Tessa. I just worry about my friends."

"Which I appreciate, but I don't need it."
