"I know this is stretching our..." Bruce scratched the back of his head. "I wouldn't ask but everyone I would ask is unavailable, and everyone else who's available I wouldn't want within two hundred yards of this kid."

Contessa nodded, deciding to ignore the pain in her chest. He was a bright man, but a man nonetheless she reminded herself. He didn't mean it quite like that.

"I know I can't keep him from the sycophants forever, but I thought that maybe for the first night--"

"You don't want to throw him under the bus," Contessa finished. "Sure. Nice to know someone thinks I'm normal."

Bruce chuckled. It eased the ache in her chest. "You're not after me for my money," he said.

She shrugged. "You always pay your bills on time."

"You don't pry into my life."

"If you wanted me to know, you'd tell me."

"Those are rare qualities." If he'd said it with a smile she wouldn't have believed him.

"Maybe you're just not looking in the right places."

He flashed her a quick smile then, the billionaire playboy grin, and ducked his head.
