Even So

Contessa rested her hip against the kitchen counter. "So a favor, but not exactly a 'save me from the grasping females' kind of favor. What does that mean?"

"Do you remember the circus incident?"

She couldn't forget it. Her brother and his family had been visiting that week, and Contessa had offered to give them a free afternoon by taking her niece to the circus' matinee performance. She and Olivia had enjoyed themselves immensely. But by that evening...disaster. She'd never told Bruce that she'd been to the earlier performance.

Contessa nodded. "How could I forget?"

"The boy. I'm taking him in."

"Really? You can do that? I'm sure you've noticed that you're a single man with no intentions of marrying any time soon."

Bruce spread his hands as if to say I just can. "Money has it's benefits. Anyway, there's still some paperwork to get out of the way and a few more hands to grease..." He grinned at her raised eyebrows. "Then he'll be home. Here."

"Okay. Um, congratulations? You're doing a great thing." If he'd been someone else she might have asked Bruce about the boy's circus family, but he was Bruce. Prying wasn't part of their relationship, and lack of thoroughness wasn't part of Bruce's nature.

Bruce waved off her praise. "I was hoping you'll come to dinner that first night. Help make it less weird."

Contessa's eyebrows went up. "Because inviting your tech consultant and sort-of friend to dinner will do that?"

There was actual laughter in his voice when he said, "I just want to show him that there are normal people who at least drop by the house every now and again."
