oy i'm a slacker
Feb. 15th, 2009 12:09 amSo to follow up my previous posting, here are the things I've been reading lately:
Fire Study by Maria V. Snyder, which is the last book in her (as far as I know) unnamed series. Previous, extremely brief, reviews are here. I found the main character annoying through much of the book, but apparently that worked b/c I zipped right through it.
The Eyre Affair, Lost in a Good Book and (just finished) The Well of Lost Plots by Jasper Fforde - I have loved this series. I'm pretty sure the series is still in progress and that I haven't reached the last current book. The books are supremely fun if you love classic literature, particularly classic English lit. It's hard to explain what makes the books so much fun. Trust me, I've already tried. But if you like a bit of satire, and a lot of humor, and just...it's great. Read the books, darnit, or at least give'em a go.
Nighttime Wanderings by Marchwriter is an adorable young!Aragorn fic.
A Difficult Conversation is what got me started reading the rest of Marchwriter's fic, I think.
First Name Terms, A Warrior's Experience, and Agarwaen are also by Marchwriter, and are part of a series exploring the friendship between Aragorn and Haldir.
and as I write this I realize it's been for-ever since I recced/put up my reading list! *is ashamed* This may take longer than originally planned.
20 Moments of a Life Never Lived by Duckie Nicks (aka
lieueitak) is a House fic that deals with the life Cuddy might have had with her almost-adopted child, Joy, if that had worked out. House himself is, of course, a stinker through the whole thing, but in the way you want and expect him to be. I know it's not lieueitak's fave, but I really liked this one.
Here's another from lieueitak that didn't make it into the last read-list out of pure forgetfulness: When the World Ends is also House fic and also deals with the Joy storyline. I enjoyed it immensely.
The Probability Factor by jesuiscandien on ff.net started out with great promise. It's another LOTR fic, Haldir/OC (I've been on a Haldir kick. That and crossovers), and at first the OC seemed really believable. But then...not so much. I'm not sure I finished it. I know I kept reading for a long time because it had started so well but...well...I really had hoped for better.
Other ppl may not go with me on this one, but I really enjoyed Draconian Elflord's "Sweeney Todd" fic, Recognition in which Todd recognizes Johanna for who she is and, in a way, tries to right things with her. I was really afraid it was going to turn to cheese but...it worked for me.
And that's it for tonight. I have about a half-dozen yuletide fics to note and recommend, not the least of which are the 2 that were written for me; I probably have 3 times as much erin-fic to mention; I didn't give
rissy_james or
fiestyfox their due; and, who knows, I might be missing some real, novel-writing authors as well. Oh and there was some Whovian fic by
amberfocus I think. Or maybe it's amber_focus? *ponders*
Oh! I just finished re-reading Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis :D

Date: 2009-02-16 03:49 am (UTC)As for the Jim Butcher stuff...I've been tempted. I think Jaime's read it and liked, at least he knew what the heck the Dresden Files were when they came to SciFi. I'll put it on my reading queue ;)
