How in the world did I fall into this at a time like this. Is it because it's Easter and things concerning Christendom tend to come up around the major Christian holidays? (And why don't things concerning other religions come up during their major holidays?) I'm sitting here watching Anderson Cooper 360 and the topic is "What is a Christian: Sex and Salvation." The segment we've been watching has been on, you guessed it, Christianity (in a Fundamentalist sense I am forced to disclaim, thank you very much [livejournal.com profile] lieueitak, although, wouldn't you know...no one makes a distinction of Fundamentalist or not on this thing. I wonder if that's b/c in most ppl's minds they don't like to differentiate.) and homosexuality. Specifically Christian organizations that are about "curing" homosexuality, the ppl who say they've been cured, and ppl who say they weren't and/or couldn't be.

And in case I haven't been clear before I am not pro-homosexuality. I believe it's a choice - albeit a choice that is often too slow to ever feel like a choice. And that's part of the issue, isn't it.

Aaaaand now we've moved on to porn. Go fig.

Hi Tin! You sound overwhelmed. Don't be overwhelmed! Actually, I think other religions also come under more scrutiny during their major holidays-- when in the last 5 years has Ramadan rolled around without some mention of Islam? But people (Americans?) in general aren't that well-educated about religions, usually, not even their own, and in America most people know more about Christianity than anything else. Whether they could tell you how Greek Orthodoxy is different from Calvinism is, I think, unlikely. Do not despair if CNN has made you feel like important issues of your faith are little more than a titillating movie of the week. The part of the human creature that cares about market share is always going to be a pinhead.

I think that what matters to the Judeo-Christian tradition is being thoughtful; presenting your ideas with respect and clarity; and staying engaged in the struggle to understand the "Essential Mystery." You know? That you do all of those things makes the world a better place.

Hugs! qLiz

Oh qL! *hugs*

And I realized after I posted that this isn't all being dumped on me, which is how I think I made it sound, but that now that I've jumped into the issue I've become more sensative to it. And that's not necessarily a bad thing if I'm going to be part of the debate as a whole. I think I thought that me being part of the homosexuality thread on HC (ye olde 17 page responser) would be my own little corner of the debate world - but it's a big world and a big debate! And I'm going to have to get over my narcissism and realize that.

Like you said, Best Beloved, there's no reason for me to be overwhelmed. I don't have to be involved with everything. The media isn't going to debate a hot-button topic in the light of the finer points of Christianity. I can just be whelmed. :)

P.S. The part of the human creature that cares about market share is always going to be a pinhead. <-- I love that.
