My-Grandmother, from that far off distant land known as Family-of-great-cooks-who-won't-share-their-recipes

My grandfather used to make the BEST pancakes in the WORLD. He was a big fan of "throw it in the bowl and see what comes out", and it was always brilliant.

I wish I'd paid attention when he'd made them, because then I would have something left of him.

Your grandma sounds like a good cook. :)

Apparently my gram is like your grandfather (my grandfather knew how to cook just enough to keep himself fed, and/or keep me amused), at least from the way Mom talks about her former cooking habits. It sounds like when she was a stay at home mom, she made all sorts of things that I didn't even know we knew. On the other hand she and all her sibs are good cooks or bakers, many of them absolutely fabulous cooks or bakers.

Me and Mom and some of my adult cousins feel the way you do about your grandfather re our aunties and uncles. My gram is the youngest and she's in her late 60s. They're all getting older, we've had a number of deaths in that generation over the last few years, and we're starting to realize the things we're losing out on. And for a family with a legacy of good eats, losing out on their recipes is a real loss. Not just b/c the food is good, but we're also losing the stories they used to tell while they cooked and made you chop and shell -- life advice, family stories, general been-there-done-that-don't-you-do-it-too kinds of wisdom.
