The laptop is falling apart and so I'm breaking down and getting a new one...soon. I have no idea what my onlineness will be like. Le sigh. I was really hoping to save my refund money for once...

On the one hand, blah for having to spend money. On the other, yay for new toy?

Aww! Computers suck sometimes...

Computers are relatively cheap nowadays as long as you aren't looking to buy gaming specs.

You're right, and I'm not. I'm just back from a computer-looking venture. Didn't come home w/anything though :( I'm thinking of an HP G70-250US or Pavilion DV7-1129WM

There are always two hands in situations like this. Must say I am looking forward to the upgrade in space and drivers, etc.

I think that's worth a look. Slightly cheaper than the 1000HE and does pretty much everything you need it to do, except it doesn't have an internal dvd or cd-rom. Externals are available, though. I would spend a little more and expand to 2GB of RAM, though.

I love geeky friends *hugs*

On a related note: I need the internals. Or I guess I desperately want the internals. I don't listen to music on my laptop often, but I do need it for all the uploading to my Zune. And I'd like an at least 15" screen.

I've also been pondering these or something in the family. Thoughts?: http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Satellite-A355-S6924-16-0-Inch-Laptop/dp/B001UQ6LZQ/ref=pd_ts_pc_1?ie=UTF8&s=pc

I like the Eee for its mobility, something very important for a wannabe writer, but you should obviously go with something else if you want a bigger screen. All the models you've listed look okay, but keep in mind that you pay for the larger screen. It might be cheaper overall to get an external monitor for use at home and purchase a laptop with a smaller screen. Whatever you do, I think you really want Windows XP instead of Vista.

I highly agree that I *really* want XP over Vista.

I'm really not that mobile. My room, the livingroom, occasionally my gram's. I like hand writing when I'm not in an easy sit-down space, and not just b/c I don't like lugging around the laptop. I genuinely like hand writing things. There are just some silly writer-y things you can do on paper that you just can't do on a lappy.

Wait...so how do I go about searching for XP based OS? Just put it into my search parameters?

I think Newegg lets you search by OS, but a system either comes with it or not. Or you have to find a place that lets you build your own like Dell and select Windows XP for your OS, but not all will allow it as an option.

Our IT guy suggested a Dell Vostro

I don't really like the Vostro. It just seems a bit clunky to me although I'm sure it works and is practical. This looks pretty nice, though:

It is pretty. Wouldn't I need to get peripherals for it though?

I would expand it to 2GB of RAM for use with Windows XP. It has no internal dvd/cd-rom drive, but it has 5 usb ports. An external usb cd or dvd-rom should run you less than $100, and it's supposed to come with a keyboard and mouse. For example, this one is $63.50, but you can probably find cheaper:

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SE-S084B-RSBN-External-DVD-Writer/dp/B001MLZKAQ/ref=pd_cp_pc_1?pf_rd_p=413863501&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B001ROYAEK&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=19F2H0HHESPBTF8E4JZ5

Seems like it would still be within your budget, having seen the prices of the other models you're interested in. If at all possible, try to find a store that carries the computer you plan to buy so you can get a feel for it.

I spent all Sat feeling out laptops, so I know what you mean. I actually don't like the texture (or lack thereof) of the HP lappies.

and the other downside of this one is that I don't have a desk.
